A much easier solution is to fit an afterburner with all those beam lasers and get CLOSER... Yes, closer.
It's all about game mechanics. All npc enemies "orbit". If you get inside their orbit distance, they try to get back out - and that means going straight away from you. As long as you manage to stay inside their orbit range, using preferably something like "KeepAtRange 2000 meters" orders... they are sitting ducks. You will get 100% clear shots right up their tail pipes at point blank range, with high-damage short-range crystals. And I mean CLEAR shots - ZERO angular velocity, which is better than you would get beaming down battleships at 100 km range. When the tracking goes out the window, knowing little tricks like this is a godsend. Once those pesky disruptors are space dust - that afterburner lets you get some range again on whatever you want range on, and you can slot some yellow crystals back in and get back to work.
Of course, all this requires being able to outrun cruisers. Personally, I'm usually in an Armageddon, with an afterburner fitted. Maybe an Abaddon with low skills won't reach a high enough top speed.
There's generally two schools on how to fly a battleship, and I seem to be in the least popular. The popular school is to shove all the mids full of rechargers, build the strongest possible tank, and become a lumbering behemoth, with no control over the battlefield. I'm following the space superiority school of thought: never leave home without an afterburner. With one less recharger, and one more cap sucking module to keep my eyes on, it's more intensive on capacitor and navigation skills in a bit of a way, especially in the beginning. However, it never takes me 5 minutes to reach a warp gate, and nothing tells me the conditions under which I fight. My extra speed, applied properly - makes me take less damage from the enemy, especially the battleships. Anything that out-tracks me and gets close - I chase up the rear and beam down with wreckless abandon, as if I was in a pulse-boat. Only frigates are safe from my guns, and that's only at short range. :) However, those rare ships are nothing a wing of drones won't take care of.
